New Haven, Conn. - The Center for Nicotine and Tobacco Use Research at Yale (CENTURY) is offering funding for pilot projects to initiate research that involves transdisciplinary research relating to tobacco use and dependence. Transdisciplinary research incorporates methodological approaches and /or theories from different disciplines to understand a central problem We invite letters of intent for pilot projects with a submission deadline of February 15, 2005. We are particularly interested in pilot projects that are focused on understanding tobacco use and dependence in women and alcohol drinkers. We are also interested in the interaction between depression and tobacco use. Ultimately, this research should have implications for the development of more effective strategies for prevention or treatment. Projects that study these risk factors from a transdisciplinary perspective, and incorporate the following elements are encouraged:
Each letter of intent should have a descriptive title (not to exceed 60 characters) for the proposed project and the name and title of principal investigator and other key personnel. The letter should include the following:
Four pilot project at the $25,000 level will be funded. A total of $100,000 will be awarded on an annual basis. Please submit the original letter and one copy and include the applicant's address, telephone and fax numbers, E-mail address, and funding level category. The letter must be accompanied by the NIH- style “Other Support” and 2-page “biosketch” (rev 9/04). Please limit the letter to a maximum of three pages, typewritten, double spaced, 12-point font, and one-inch margins. Facsimiles will not be accepted. The letters will be reviewed by members of the Scientific Review Committee and a full application will be requested from those investigators whose proposed projects are particularly promising, and likely to lead to larger applications that will answer important questions. Full applications will be due by April 5, 2005 and will be sent out for peer review. The Program does not provide critiques for unsuccessful proposals. Eligibility : Full-time Yale faculty or full-time faculty-level members of Yale-affiliated hospitals and Yale post-doctoral fellows are eligible to apply. Investigators outside the Yale community are invited to collaborate with Yale or Yale-affiliated principal investigators.
